Here’s another Game of Thrones location that I really wanted to find after seeing it in the show. The episode in question was the third instalment of season 2. Catelyn Stark is going to meet one of the many new kings that have been popping up, King Renly. He and his queen, Margaery, are sitting watching a fight between the queen’s brother and what turns out to Brienne of Tarth. Around them are some white cliffs so I assumed it was some little bay I didn’t know about.
After a bit of research I found out that the location was actually a former quarry at Larrybane and it is currently used as an overspill carpark for the Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge. I decided to have a look for it this morning and headed off, camera in hand.
As it turns out it is just a mile or two at most from Ballintoy Harbour as seen in my previous location visit so it would be quite easy to do both on the same trip.
Fortunately the overspill carpark was closed and I was able to get photos without any cars spoiling things.
Here are a few photos matched with screen shots of the episode.
The king and queen watch the fight with the ‘cliff’ behind them.
A view of the fight. Note the sand on the ground that must have been brought in to make it look like a beach.
The king and queen’s point of view of the fight. Through the gap between the ‘cliffs’ we can see Rathlin Island in the distance. It was that shot that made me want to find the location.
I was quite pleased to find this one. (Never thought finding a former quarry would have been on my list of things to do.)
